Revitalizing Neighborhoods
The ground-breaking Upper Manhattan Historic Preservation Fund (UMHPF) awarded grants and loans totaling $4 million to 30 projects. The Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ) created UMHPF in 1999 to assist historic properties in Harlem, Inwood, and Washington Heights. UMEZ asked the Conservancy to administer the Fund because of our long experience with grant administration and project management assistance.
Because Harlem is renowned for its gospel choirs, the Fund focused on landmark-quality historic churches that actively participate in economic development efforts with tours and other heritage activities.
