About The Landmark
Completed in 1899 for banker and investor Isaac D. Fletcher, this exquisite mansion is a standout work of architect C.P.H. Gilbert, known for designing more than 100 grand residences across New York. Its intricate François I–style stonework—crafted by respected builder Harvey Murdock—earned early acclaim, including publication in the Architectural Record shortly after its completion. In 1955, the mansion began a new chapter as the home of the Ukrainian Institute of America. Founded in 1948 by William Dzus, the Institute was created to share the art, music, literature, and cultural traditions of Ukraine and the Ukrainian diaspora with the wider public. Today, the Ukrainian Institute welcomes visitors to explore exhibitions, concerts, lectures, and educational programs in one of Manhattan’s most beautiful historic settings. Designated a National Historic Landmark and proudly standing at Fifth Avenue and 79th Street in the Metropolitan Museum Historic District, it remains a vibrant cultural destination for all.
