Sacred Sites Director Ann Friedman was celebrated at a lively retirement party on September 26 attended by more than 100 fans and well-wishers. Her official retirement date was October 1. Ann spent 23 years traveling the State and guiding congregations of all denominations through restoration projects funded by Sacred Sites grants. She became affectionately known as the “Jewish Church Lady.”
Councilmember Gale Brewer read a proclamation citing Ann’s encyclopedic knowledge of religious buildings, and her enthusiasm, dedication, and sprit that endeared her to congregations and colleagues alike.
“Some professionals earn the respect of their colleagues,” Conservancy President Peg Breen remarked, “but very few earn their love. Ann earned love.”
Conservancy Chair Lloyd Zuckerberg gave a heartfelt tribute, saying he knew Ann was a “class act” from the beginning.
Ann came to the Conservancy after serving at the City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission. LPC Chief Council Mark Silberman read remarks from LPC Chair Sarah Carroll and added, personally, how much he respected Ann. Alex Herrera, who worked with Ann and both institutions added his praise.
As a gift from the Conservancy, Stained Glass Artist Patrick created a unique plaque from pieces of historic religious stained glass.
Colleen Heemeyer, longtime Sacred Sites Deputy Director, has been promoted as the new Director.
