DESCRIPTION:(Left to Right) Rev. Dr. William Lupfer – Trinity Church Wall Street; Andrew Kimball – Industry City; Michael Braner – Chairman of the Landmarks Conservancy; and Richard J. Moylan – Green–Wood.\n\nOver 200 Guests Celebrate 30th Annual Chairman’s Award \nMore than 200 persons filled The Metropolitan Club on June 7 for the 30th annual Chairman’s Award Luncheon. The three distinguished honorees each demonstrated that historic buildings can and do serve today’s needs. \nAndrew Kimball\, CEO of Industry City\, was honored for turning an 1857 industrial complex on the Sunset Park waterfront into an economic powerhouse. Kimball said that “without the Landmarks Conservancy\, and other New York visionaries\, places like Industry City and the Brooklyn Navy Yard would have been leveled by some misguided planning effort.” \nRev. Dr. William Lupfer\, Rector of Trinity Wall Street\, was honored for the recent restoration of 254 year-old St. Paul’s Chapel and Churchyard and initiating the interior restoration of Richard Upjohn’s 1846 Trinity Church. “When you think about it\, buildings guide people’s actions and interactions\,” Rev. Lupfer said. “They carry through values from previous times to now.” \nRichard J. Moylan\, President of Green-Wood Cemetery and the Green-Wood Historic Fund was honored for his care of the monuments and grounds of the National Historic Landmark and initiating tours and programs that draw more than 250\,000 visitors annually to the 1838 site. “The Conservancy’s help has been invaluable to where Green-Wood is now\,” he said\,” and that is special.” \nGovernor Andrew Cuomo sent greetings and thanked the Conservancy “for its continued\, steadfast\, splendid endeavors to preserve the symbols of this state’s heritage\, values and greatness.” Peter Kiernan\, Special Counsel to the Governor for Industrial Initiatives\, delivered the Governor’s message . Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer thanked the Conservancy for working with her to secure new landmarks in East Midtown\, preserve the South Street Seaport Museum and other initiatives. Guests included Ambassador Marcelo M. Giusto\, Counsul General of the Republic of Argentina. \nConservancy Chair Michael Braner congratulated the honorees and reminded the guests why the preservation of New York’s architectural heritage is so important. “Historic buildings offer “a tangible\, physical thread to our shared past\,” he said\, adding that preservation “improves the day-to-day experience of living in New York City.” \n______________________________________ \nMORE INFO ABOUT THE HONOREES \nAndrew Kimball\, Industry City\nAndrew Kimball is CEO of Industry City\, a 30-acre industrial complex on the Sunset Park waterfront in Brooklyn. SUMMARY:2017 Chairman’s Award
DESCRIPTION:Dick Anderson\, Cardinal Timothy Dolan\, and Joseph Tortorella\, President of SILMAN photo by Noel Sutherland\nMay 24\, 2017\nChairman’s Award Luncheon Honors Special New York Leaders \nA capacity crowd filled The Metropolitan Club on May 24 for the Chairman’s Award Luncheon honoring Richard T. “Dick” Anderson\, president emeritus of the New York Building Congress\, SILMAN\, a premier preservation engineering firm and Timothy Cardinal Dolan. \nThe award is given to an individual or firm who has demonstrated a commitment to historic preservation. \nCardinal Dolan\, honored for the restoration of St. Patrick’s\, commented on the large crowd. “At the Cathedral\, we’d call this a two-collection crowd\,” he joked. Several firms who worked on St. Patrick’s restoration were at the luncheon and the Cardinal thanked them for their dedication. He remarked that one worker he spoke with told him his job was “rebuilding a Cathedral.” “What a beautiful sense of pride and ownership\,” the Cardinal said. “St. Patrick’s doesn’t belong just to Catholics\,” he added\, “it belongs to all of New York. And to have the Landmarks Conservancy say that touches my heart.” \nRichard Anderson\, a nationally respected planner\, presided over the New York Building Congress for 22 years. He worked with the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan\, the Conservancy\, and other groups on securing initial federal funding for creating a train hall in the landmark Farley Post Office\, and still supports what will be the Moynihan train hall. He also worked with the Conservancy to save Eero Saarinen’s iconic former TWA terminal at JFK. \nAnderson said his first boss in New York felt deeply about regional planning and landmarks preservation and “the need to work together on both was never lost on me.” \nPresident Joseph Tortorella of SILMAN thanked the firm’s founder Robert Silman for setting the tone and the firm’s interest in preservation. SILMAN has helped preserve a number of iconic New York landmarks including Carnegie Hall\, Radio City Music Hall\, the Guggenheim Museum\, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. \nTortorella said working on St. Patrick’s was special and thanked the Cardinal for overseeing the extensive restoration. He added that the Conservancy “is a valued client” even when we can’t pay for their expertise. \nConservancy Chair Lloyd Zuckerberg said the honorees illustrated something he always knew\, that good preservation is good business. \nThe Chairman’s Award\nThe New York Landmarks Conservancy inaugurated the Chairman’s Award in 1988 to recognize exceptional individuals\, organizations\, and businesses that have demonstrated their dedication to protecting New York’s architectural heritage. \nIn celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Chairman’s Award\, the Landmarks Conservancy is pleased to honor: Dick Anderson for his distinguished service to the New York Building Congress; His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan for his visionary leadership of the recent restoration of St. Patrick’s Cathedral\, and Silman on their 50th anniversary as one of the world’s premiere engineering firms. \nHonorary Co-Chairs\nEric Rudin\, Rudin Management\nCarlo Scissura\, New York Building Congress\nRichard Southwick\, Beyer Blinder Belle \nLeadership Committee Chair\nFrank J.
